A huge well done to our Eco-Committee, whose efforts pre-lockdown in producing an action plan to improve recycling across DCC has been recognised with the Eco-Schools Bronze Award.
As you will be aware, on Monday 22nd February 2021 the Prime Minister announced to the nation that from 8th March 2021 âpupils and students in all schools and further education settings can safely return to face-to-face teachingâ and that âschool attendance will be mandatory for all pupils, with secondary schools and colleges able to phase return over the week of 8th March to allow students to be offered testing on returnâ. The testing of students in college continues to progress well and we are now at the stage where we are ready to move from testing in college to home testing.
If you gave consent for your child to take part in the COVID-19 testing currently taking place in College then no further action is needed, your child will receive their first batch of home testing kits this week when they receive their third and final test in College.
If you did not give consent for your child to take part in the COVID-19 testing taking place in College then you may still opt-in to home testing for your child. Please read the attached letter outlining our approach to home testing in more detail and the attached COVID-19 testing privacy statement detailing the data we will need to collect from you and how it will be treated. If after reading these documents you wish to opt-in to home testing for your child/children then please complete the Consent form for opting-in to Home testing for your child/children before Friday the 19th of March, 2021.
If you choose to opt-in to home testing for your child, they will receive their first batch of home testing kits in the week commencing Monday, the 22nd of March, 2021.
Below you will find some responses to frequently asked questions, additional information, and the letter sent home about home testing if these do not answer any query you may have then please feel free to contact Mr Nixon.

In recent years, DCC students have been used to celebrating World Book Days with scenes like this – staff dressed as some of their favourite book characters, and students completing quizzes and challenges to win prizes based around their teachersâ favourite books. Of course, this year things will be very different but we are still celebrating World Book Day and the powerful effect that reading can have on our mental health.
Scientific studies have shown for many years the positive effect that reading can have on academic attainment, but there are so many other positives to it besides helping students to achieve better grades in school, including the evidence that it can reduce stress AND combat the symptoms of depression. The positive effect reading can have on our mental health really cannot be underestimated, and this is especially important given the difficulties we have all faced over the past 12 months.
Unsurprisingly, the boredom and anxiety that some young people have experienced during lockdown has seen more and more of them reading for pleasure. After all, there are only so many times they can practice their new Tik Tok moves!
The Literacy Trust has carried out a study of nearly 60,000 people aged 11-18 about their attitudes to reading in Lockdown. Over 60% of those surveyed said that reading had made them feel better âoverallâ during the 2020 Lockdown, and just over 30% said specifically that reading had helped them to deal with missing their friends and family members.
Here at DCC we are still promoting a love of literature throughout college, despite the lockdown, and we canât wait to welcome students back through the doors in the coming days to celebrate with us – already there has been an online quiz to identify the Mystery Staff Readers and there will be prizes to win, other competitions to enter and book tokens to spend waiting for students upon their return.
If you would like to try and guess the mystery readers watch our assembly video below and submit your answers through the link. Happy Reading!

Regular testing of our staff and students has already begun in our on-site testing facility. The COVIDâ19 tests, known as âlateral flow devicesâ, help identify asymptomatic cases of COVID-19 that might otherwise not be detected within school populations, and the government hopes this testing will reduce the ability of the virus to spread undetected. Anyone who has a positive result will immediately have to self-isolate for ten days, as would his or her close contacts.
The testing will be carried out by a team made up of school staff and some external volunteers all of whom have completed the required government training to enable testing to take place and have full DBS safeguarding checks. The tests are entirely self-administered – the students will complete the process themselves – and they will need to have three tests within six to ten days. However, this can only take place with your consent – no test will be taken without it.
If you would like for your child/children to take part in this testing programme you need to give your consent for them to do so. Please read the attached letter outlining our approach to testing in more detail and the attached COVID-19 testing privacy statement detailing the data we will need to collect from you and how it will be treated. If after reading these documents you wish to give your consent for your child/children to take part in the testing programme then please complete the relevant consent form below before 3pm on Wednesday the 3rd of March, 2021.
