Denton Students win as Teen Tech Team!

Year 9 students from Design Technology visited the TeenTech event at Manchester University last week.
Altogether 10 students took the opportunity to be inspired by the contemporary world of Science, Engineering and Technology (STEM).
The TeenTech event gave students the opportunity to try their hand at experiments, to handle leading-edge technology and, most importantly to spend time with Engineers, Technologists and Scientists influencing their 21st-century lives.
Various prizes were handed out and the Denton “Teen Tech” ambassadors won the award for ’Best Design’ with one of their concepts. Well done Teen Tech Team!

Brilliant Results Again for Graduating University Students!

Denton Community is proud to announce it’s the latest set of Alumni from the Brilliant Club University Scholars Programme. The students graduated from Manchester University last week after completing University style dissertations based on a wide range of topics in a range of disciplines. These included English, Maths, Science and Humanities.

This is the 4th Year that the college has been involved with the Brilliant Club programme and it is again a year of tremendous success for all the students involved.

This year 34 Denton students completed this challenging academic exercise, all students managed to complete all aspects of the course and submit work in order to obtain a University Style Degree Certificate.

The Scholars Programme recruits, trains and places doctoral and postdoctoral researchers in schools to deliver programmes of university-style tutorials, these are then supplemented by two university trips. It aims to increase the number of pupils from under-represented backgrounds progressing to highly selective universities. They do this by mobilising the PhD community to share its academic expertise with state schools. DCC has worked with the programme for four years.

This year DCC entered it’s the largest cohort of students and they worked to complete University style dissertations over an extended period of time. The students were highly successful and produced the best results the school has seen from the programme.

Their work was marked with a University style grading system, and over 30% of the Cohort received the highest grade of either a 1st and 20% achieved a 2:1. These grades demonstrate that these students are working at A level standard. 50% of students achieved the next two grades of 2:2 or 3rd which are as good as GCSE level. All these grades are an amazing achievement considering that the students have not yet begun GCSE courses.

Congratulations to all involved, and special thanks to Ms Driver for organising, arranging and supporting this opportunity.

 

 

 

Life Long Learning promoted at DCC PSHE Drop Down Day.

On Friday 17th January 2020 Denton Community College replaced our usual day with a range of specialist lessons as part of our annual Life Long Learning PSHE Drop Down Day! The day utilises a range of specialist lessons delivered through a mix of external agencies and internal staff in order to cover a range of important PSHE and wider community issues.

Topics were chosen to compliment the age of each student, topics for this year’s event included but were not limited to:

  • First aid training,
  • Knife crime awareness,
  • The dangers of online gambling,
  • Hate crime awareness
  • Sex and relationships education.

The Drop Down Day allows the college to draw on the experiences of trained professionals and those with lived experience to educate and inform our young people about the wider community and the world they live in.

This day also gives students the opportunity to learn in new and exciting ways, challenging themselves to communicate with new people and learn life essential life skills, becoming well-rounded individuals.

DCC crowned “U13 Champions” at Tameside Girls Football Tournament!

DCC were last night crowned U13 Champions in the Tameside Girls Football Tournament.
The Tournament has taken place over 2 weeks and demonstrated the spirit, determination and talent of the U13 Girls team.
After cruising through the first week of the tournament with a spectacular win over Hyde (6-0) and Fairfield B (5-0) the girls faced a tough second week with 4 games ahead of them. They started off the first game with a tough start with a 1-1 draw against Alder, the drama was heightened with a late equaliser! They then went onto win against Fairfield A, Droylsden and Rayner Stephens.
The team didn’t know the results of the other schools when they had finished their round of matches and had an agonising wait whilst the other scores came in. However, this wait added to the celebrations and made victory all the sweeter as Denton Community College were declared winners of the Tameside Tournament!
The girls were outstanding throughout all games, they showed fantastic sportsmanship and as always represented DCC in a respectable manner. Miss Redfern would like to that she is  “Super proud” of all the girls and wants to say Well done!

Christmas Hamper Appeal 2019

Dear Parents and Carers,
We are asking Year 9,10 and 11 students to bring non perishable foods items to college for the St Mary’s and Carmel Church food hamper appeal. These donations can be handed into main reception by Monday 2nd December.  If each form could bring in just 2 cans of food would mean we have 60 cans to donate. Therefore every donation makes a real difference.
In addition to this on Tuesday 3rd December, four Year 9 Community Ambassadors will be visiting Carmel Church and St Mary’s at 10am to help pack the food hampers.
