On Friday 15th November 2019 students and staff are encouraged to come to school wearing something yellow, this could be a T-shirt or a top over their shirt, a tie or another item of Yellow clothing with your uniform. In addition to this, we are asking for a £1 donation that will be given to Children in Need.

BBC Children in Need is the BBC’s UK charity. Since 1980 it has raised over £1 billion for disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.

The school will also celebrate the event and have further fundraising opportunities by involving ourselves with “Move For Children in Need”. Students and Staff will be in the schoolyard engaging with a flash mob-style fitness event led by Mr Day.

For every person that participates Denton Community College will make a donation! The more the merrier.

Finally, Staff and Year 10 & 11 are invited to  take part in after school Body pump with Mr Day
For every person wearing yellow Mr Day will donate a pound!Let’s raise as much as we can

LEP Sports Leaders Training

LEP Sports Leaders Training

On Friday 18th October 2019 some of our year 9 Sports Leadership Academy students delivered a Sports Leaders Training afternoon to year 5 students from 5 of our LEP Primary Schools.  They delivered activities to help develop their team-building skills and leadership qualities, alongside helping them to plan, set-up and deliver their own activities/games.  The year 5 students had a great afternoon getting to know each other and having lots of fun!  A special thanks to Ruby, Chloe, Ruby, Ria, Andrew, Olivia and Isabelle for planning and delivering this afternoon!  The Year 5 students will now go on to deliver sports clubs to younger students at break time and lunch in their Primary school.

To celebrate 20 years of supporting school breakfast clubs, Kellogg’s has awarded the college £1,000 to enhance the club and help feed our young people in the morning.

The college was selected to receive this boost as Kellogg’s announce they are to double their investment in breakfast clubs in 2019 as more and more schools struggle to find the budget to fund this service for their pupils.

Breakfast clubs help with everything from attendance and attainment to alleviating hunger and providing pre-school care. 68 per cent of teachers believe pupils would struggle to concentrate in class without their breakfast club, according to Kellogg’s research.

Mrs Duffy ( Head of Community) said: “We are so grateful to receive this generous donation. We have since been able to purchase equipment, cereal, milk for our club.

These resources will help us to provide our breakfast club services for our young people and help  their families thanks to the support from Kellogg’s.”

Kate Prince, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, at Kellogg’s, said “We’re proud to have spent 20 years supporting so many schools across the UK. We believe all children should have the opportunity to start the day with breakfast, and we know that equipment and resources are just as important to clubs as the food itself.”

Kellogg’s has supported 3,000 school breakfast clubs with funds, food and training over the last 20 years – that’s 70 million bowls of cereal to children all over the UK since 1998.

Denton Students have been taking part in a community Garden Project to make the local area more appealing and improve well being.

The Community Garden project was set up to create a network of partners across Droylsden, Audenshaw and Denton. Partners consist of GP practices, community groups, St Martins Church, Integrated Neighbourhood Manager Jeanette Leach, local volunteers and Action Together Community Wellbeing officer. The project will run between October 2019 and March 2020.

Greenscape run monthly sessions to upskill volunteers and to put together a bespoke project brief for each location. Each partner takes ownership of insuring volunteers and engaging in sessions.  The GP practice manager will work with the health champions and GP’s will refer patients into the project. Action Together social prescriber will also refer clients into the project as this has been identified as a gap and people have been identified already as to who would be perfect for the project.

Project Outcomes:

  • To improve the greenspace areas across the community.
  • To improve wellbeing.
  • Reduce social isolation and loneliness.
  • Create mutually beneficial networks of support and resilience.
  • To improve partnerships & collaboration across localities.
  • Support people with low mood, low self-esteem/loss of confidence.
  • Support place-based working that improves lives in local communities.
