Students from Denton Community College were invited to accompany members of the Denton Town Twinning Association to Denton’s twin town of Montigny le Bretonneux on Friday 9th November 2018. The visit to commemorate the centenary of the the end of the first world war ‘Le Centinaire de la Grande Guerre’ also involved representatives from Kierspe, Germany and Marostica, Italy.
The town of Montigny had been given the great honour of collecting the flame from the grave of the unknown soldier in Paris and returning with this as part of a number of commemorative Armistice events. Students accompanied representatives from the town to the Arc de Triomphe to collect the flame on Saturday 10th November. Upon returning to the town hall at Montigny, student Tilly Arkinstall spoke to over 300 people (in French) about the her Great Grandfather’s experiences in the trenches at the Battle of the Somme.
On Armistice Day the students were part of the parade through Montigny le Bretonneux and laid a wreath at the town cenotaph on behalf of the people of Denton.
