Youth Travel Ambassador (YTA) programme

The Youth Travel Ambassador (YTA) programme empowers secondary school students with the skills and confidence to address transport issues affecting their school community. The programme focuses on increasing the number of students who travel actively, to and from school.

A  team of 5 ambassadors were appointed from  school to participate in the project. They attended a series of sessions delivered by a Youth Tavel Ambassador coordinator from Transport for Greater Manchester. The sessions aim to increase their knowledge of the benefits of active travel, the barriers and issues people may face in travelling this way, as well as understanding what a behaviour change campaign is.

The ambassadors were given the opportunity to gather data on transport issues and barriers affecting their school.  They then used this data to devise and implement their own behaviour change campaigns, targeting their peers. They won the funding to deliver their campaigns  secured at an interschool “Dragon’s Den” style pitching event, where a panel of judges awarded a grant of £500.

At the end of the programme, after the campaigns have been delivered, all participating schools will come together again to celebrate their success and share their achievements.

Mr Lewis, our Head of Drama, along with his wife Lisa, will be dancing the night away on March 11th as they aim to raise money for Willow Wood Hospice in Ashton-under-Lyne. The event, ‘Strictly Dance’, sees a number of volunteers go way outside their comfort zones as they team up with a partner and learn a full dance routine in just 6 lessons!

The couples then perform their routine in front of an audience of 300 people and a panel of special guest judges, to see who will take home the Glitterball trophy.

Having never had any form of dance training before, Mr. Lewis is certainly having to put some hard work in but it’s all for such a fantastic cause so it’s definitely worth it! And, of course, he’s always secretly wanted to be a dancer anyway!

To find out more about this wonderful charity, or the event itself, and to keep up-to-date on Team Lewis’ “progress”, please click on the link below. If you are also able to make a donation, no matter how small, it would be hugely appreciated, as Willow Wood really is a very special place that does some incredible work for the people of Tameside.

Covid-19 Update – Testing on Return to College in January

Since March, students whose parents/carers have given consent for them to take lateral flow tests have been doing so twice a week at home to detect asymptomatic cases of COVID-19 with parents/carers reporting the results and logging them on the NHS Website and College’s Logging Site. We have had a very high uptake and we thank you for your response.

As part of the next stage of the response to the pandemic, schools have been asked to offer COVID-19 tests to students on return after the Christmas break.  There are three options for you to consider:

Option 1: testing at home before the new term starts

If your child has been taking part in home testing with no issues and you have had no issues logging the results, we ask you to ensure your child takes a test on the evening of Tuesday, 04.01.22 prior to returning to College on Wednesday, 05.01.22. To do this you will either need to save a test from a pack your child has already been issued, collect additional tests over the Christmas break from a pharmacy or alternatively order them online. In your child’s second week back in College we will then issue them a further home test kit and ask that you follow Government guidance by continuing home testing for the month of January. We continue to recommend students take their tests, either on a Sunday evening or a Monday morning and either on a Wednesday evening or a Thursday morning.

Option 2: support with testing in school as the new term starts

If your child has been taking part in home testing but you have experienced issues, either with them taking the tests or with logging the test results, we would like to offer the option for them to test once on-site in college on their return in January.

If you would like your child to have their first test in January done on-site in college, let us know by completing this Google Form by 3pm on Thursday, 16.12.21 Students will be asked to self-swab and process the test in a designated area. A trained staff member will then monitor the test result as it develops, allowing the student to return to class. The staff member will read and report the result on the students’ behalf.  After this test is done your child will be issued with a home test kit so they can be involved in home testing throughout January as described above.

Option 3: new to testing

If your child has not previously taken part in home testing but you would now like them to participate, the option for them to take a test on-site in college on their return in January is also open to them.  After the test they will be issued a test kit for involvement in home testing throughout January.

If you would like for your child to have a test in January done on-site in college, please read the attached COVID-19 testing privacy statement detailing the data we will need to collect from you and how it will be treated. If after reading this document you wish to give your consent for your child to take part in the testing programme then please complete the Consent form for Student COVID-19 testing at Denton Community College by 3pm on Thursday, 16.01.21.

The initial testing in school is an important strategy to stop the virus spreading again in January.

Year10 French cuisine trip to Manchester

Y10 French GCSE students took the bus into Manchester to widen their horizons and try some traditional French cuisine.

Students sampled poulet, avec pommes de terre au gratin, bifteck-frites, poisson-frites and either a particularly good mousse au chocolat, or a great pavlova or a tarte au citron or some sorbet/glace.

It was a super experience and all students who came loved it! Merci!

Year10 Spanish trip to El Rincon

Our Y10 Spanish GCSE students took the bus into Manchester to put their Spanish-speaking skills to the test at El Rincón de Rafa and try some traditional Spanish tapas.

Students sampled everything from patatas bravas, chorizo, croquetas de jamón, pinchos, tortilla española, champiñones campesinos and too many more to mention! A huge gracias to the team at El Rincón and ¡hasta la próxima!
